It’s mid-February, and you may be getting unpleasant surprises in the mail if your clients’ insurance plans have changed. Here’s a good “rule to live by”: if you are accepting payments from insurance, then be sure you maintain complete control of all aspects of the insurance process. What does this mean?
- When your client first calls, take down their insurance information and verify it. If it’s different than what your client understands, you want to know this before you even get started.
- At the start of every policy year (usually January 1, but not always) call again. Many many insurance plans change yearly, often not for the better, and clients don’t always keep up with this.
- Submit your bills to insurance yourself, rather than have your client do it, if you are accepting payment from the insurance. No one cares more than you!
- Keep good track of session counts and plan maximums, so you know when the insurance is close to running out. It’s an important clinical issue as well; will the client be able to continue seeing you if the insurance isn’t paying?
Avoid unpleasant surprises, and both you and your clients will be happier.
